A working, warranted rack server for a 10–80-seat business costs R 44 240 at the median — certified refurbished, with a 12-month warranty. A typical machine sits in the R 31 570 – R 62 245 range; a fully loaded four-socket build runs higher. New builds start around R 147 625 and are quoted to order. Tower, rack, NAS or mini PC?
Three questions decide it. More than three workloads or VMs → a server (rack if you have a cabinet, tower if you don’t). Storage-led — files, backups, cameras → a NAS, as the server’s backup target. One service at the edge → a mini PC. Most 10–50-seat businesses run one certified-refurbished rack server (R 44 240 median) plus a 4-bay NAS (R 15 700 median).

What size UPS does a server need?
Two divisions and a rounding-up. A 600 W rack riding through 2.5 hours of load-shedding:
- 01600 W × 2.5 h = 1.5 kWh usable
- 02÷ 0.9 depth of discharge ÷ 0.9 efficiency = 1.85 kWh → spec 2.4 kWh
- 03600 W ÷ (0.8 pf × 0.9) = 0.83 kVA → 1 kVA min, 2 kVA spec
- 04438 kWh a month at R2.8/kWh = R 1 226 → R 44 126 over 3 years

06 · Networking
Switches, PoE, Wi-Fi and firewalls — budget watts, not ports
The cheap mistake is buying the port count and forgetting the power budget. Eight 12 W cameras draw 96 W — past what most 8-port PoE switches deliver in total. Managed switches keep phones, cameras and guests on their own VLANs; past 100 m, fibre uplinks also break the lightning path.

07 · Racks, cabinets & heat
The cabinet is the cheapest part. The heat isn’t.
A 2U rack server is 700–800 mm long and needs a 1 000 mm-deep cabinet; wall-mounts (450–600 mm) take switches and a UPS, not servers. And every watt in leaves as heat: 600 W is 2 047 BTU/h, a 2 kW rack is 6 824 BTU/h — a 9 000 BTU/h split unit running flat out, on the backup-power budget too.

Can I buy my own servers?
Yes — any business can own a server outright, and for a steady workload over three to five years it is usually cheaper than renting. A certified-refurbished rack server is R 44 240 at the median in South Africa. The alternative is a NAS for storage-led work, or the cloud for spiky or distributed loads.
Is it cheaper to build or buy a server?
Building from parts is cheaper on the invoice and more expensive in practice: no warranty desk, no tested configuration, and your weekends. For payroll, files and virtual machines, a certified-refurbished system at the class median (R 44 240) is a warranted machine at close to a parts-level price.
Why are rack servers so expensive?
They are not, at the median — R 44 240 buys a warranted 14G machine. The high end of the band (to R 395 020) is configuration: terabytes of RAM and tens of terabytes of enterprise SSD, which cost more than the chassis around them.
What size UPS do I need for my server?
Size the battery from the load and the hours, the inverter from the load. A 600 W rack over 2.5 hours needs 600 × 2.5 = 1.5 kWh usable → ÷ 0.9 ÷ 0.9 = 1.85 kWh, so spec 2.4 kWh; the inverter is 600 ÷ (0.8 × 0.9) = 0.83 kVA → 1 kVA minimum, 2 kVA specified.
Which UPS is best for servers?
Online double-conversion, sized at least 1.5× the measured load in kVA, with lithium batteries if you need more than an hour. Live UPS bands (12 September 2026): 2–3 kVA R 5 640 – R 8 600, 8–10 kVA R 19 288 – R 21 083. Line-interactive units are for desktops.
Which PoE switch is best for CCTV?
The one whose power budget covers your cameras, not the one with the most ports — eight 12 W cameras draw 96 W. Budget watts, then buy the next size up, managed if the cameras share the network. A 24-port PoE switch typically runs R 4 263 – R 6 208 (median R 5 235).
Which network switch is best for a small business?
For 15–40 seats with phones and Wi-Fi, a 24-port managed (or smart) PoE gigabit switch — around R 5 235 median. For a single office with no phones, a 16-port unmanaged gigabit switch from R 505.
What is the price of a 6U or 12U server cabinet?
A 4–12U wall-mount cabinet typically runs R 1 980 – R 2 360 (median R 1 980), VAT-inclusive, 12 September 2026. A 6U sits at the low end, a 12U near the top. A 2U server needs a 1 000 mm-deep floor cabinet, not a wall-mount.
How much does a firewall cost for a small business?
A business gateway or VPN router typically runs R 3 615 – R 5 585 (median R 5 040). A next-generation firewall is quoted with a security subscription, and over three years the subscription is usually the larger part of the bill — budget the renewal from day one.
