PoE switch buying guide for South Africa: 8, 16 and 24 ports, CCTV and access points
8 ports ≠ 8 cameras. The number that matters is on the second line of the datasheet.
A PoE switch powers cameras, access points and phones down the same cable that carries their data — which is why it is the first thing an installer specifies and the first thing that gets sized wrong. This guide gives the live rand bands for PoE switches by port count in South Africa on 10 September 2026, the power-budget maths for CCTV and Wi-Fi, and the four traps that turn one switch into two.

The power-budget maths
Every PoE switch has two numbers: the ports, and the total watts it can deliver across them. The second number is the one that decides whether your cameras come up.
- Cameras: a fixed dome or bullet draws 5–8 W; a PTZ or a camera with heaters and IR arrays draws 12–25 W. Budget 12 W per camera unless the datasheet says less.
- Wi-Fi access points: 8–12 W for Wi-Fi 5; 15–20 W for Wi-Fi 6 and 6E with all radios on.
- Desk phones: 3–7 W.
Add them up, then add 20% for start-up and for the camera the client adds next year. Eight 12 W cameras are 96 W; with two Wi-Fi 6 access points they are 126 W; with headroom, 150 W. Most 8-port PoE switches deliver 60–120 W in total. A 16-port PoE switch with a 150–250 W budget is the right buy for that site — the port count is a by-product.
Which PoE switch is best for CCTV?
The one whose budget covers the cameras with 20% to spare, that is rack-mountable if there is a cabinet, and that is managed if the cameras share the network with anything else. Managed means VLANs: the cameras and the recorder live on their own network, invisible to the office and the guest Wi-Fi, which is both a security requirement and the only way to keep a camera firmware bug from taking the phones down. A 16-port managed PoE switch around R 4 190 or a 24-port around R 5 235 covers most small sites.
For a single workshop with four cameras and nothing else on the switch, an unmanaged 8-port PoE unit around R 1 575 does the job.
Four traps
- PoE versus PoE+ versus PoE++. 802.3af (PoE) gives 15.4 W per port; 802.3at (PoE+) gives 30 W; 802.3bt (PoE++) gives 60–90 W. A PTZ camera or a Wi-Fi 6E access point wants PoE+. Check the standard, not the logo.
- The 100 m rule. Ethernet stops at 100 m of cable — including the patch leads. Past that, put a switch in a wall-mount cabinet at the far end, or run fibre with SFP uplinks. Between buildings, always fibre: copper carries lightning.
- The uplink. Sixteen cameras on 1 Gbps ports feeding one 1 Gbps uplink to the recorder is fine; sixteen 4K cameras and the office through the same port is not. Look for SFP+ or at least two uplinks on anything past 16 ports.
- Heat and fans. A fully loaded 24-port PoE switch dissipates real heat. In a sealed wall cabinet it will throttle or fail; choose the perforated door, and read the cabinet guide before you mount it.
Managed or unmanaged?
Unmanaged: plugs in, works, no configuration, no VLANs. Right for one office, one workshop, a handful of devices that all belong together. Managed (or smart/lite-managed): VLANs, QoS for voice, link aggregation, monitoring. Required the moment cameras, phones or guests share the switch. The price difference in the bands above is usually a few thousand rand — less than one call-out to diagnose a network the cameras have flooded.

A 24-port managed PoE switch at R 5 235 median plus two Wi-Fi 6 access points at R 1 995 median covers most offices to 40 seats. Spend on the uplink and surge protection before you spend on the next tier of switch.
