Server cabinet and rack prices in South Africa: 4U to 42U (2026, in rand)
The cabinet is the cheapest part. The heat isn't.
What is the price of a server cabinet in South Africa? A 4U wall-mount cabinet starts at R 1 730, a 9U wall-mount with a glass door is about R 2 360, a 20U runs R 2 710 – R 3 230, and a 42U floor-standing cabinet is R 10 620 — live, VAT-inclusive prices in the Server Hub price index on 10 September 2026. Those numbers are a rounding error next to the server that goes in them. The decisions that actually cost money are the cabinet's depth and what you do with the heat.

What a 6U, 9U or 12U cabinet is for
A wall-mount cabinet holds the network: a switch or two, a patch panel, a fibre tray, a small UPS and a shelf for the router. The 9U with a glass door at R 2 360 is the typical small-office spec; 12U leaves room for a second switch and PoE for cameras. Choose the perforated door where the UPS or a PoE switch runs warm.
What a 20U or 27U cabinet is for
The step between a network cabinet and a server room: a tower-style rack for a branch or a workshop. A 20U at R 2 710 – R 3 230 takes the network plus a UPS with an extended battery pack, and — if it is 800 mm or deeper — a short-depth server.
What a 42U cabinet is for
A 42U floor cabinet at R 10 620 is the standard server-room unit: 600 mm wide, 800–1 000 mm deep, room for two or three 2U servers, a rack UPS, a KVM, a switch stack and a patch field, with 20U spare for growth. Buy the 1 000 mm-deep version; the 800 mm version fits many servers with the doors closed but leaves no room for cable arms and airflow.
The depth rule
A 2U rack server is 700–800 mm long before the power cords and the cable management arm. It needs a 1 000 mm-deep cabinet with both doors closed. Wall-mount cabinets are 450–600 mm deep — that is the whole reason they are wall-mountable — which makes them switches-and-UPS cabinets, not server cabinets. If you have one server and no room for a floor cabinet, a tower server on the floor beats a rack server in a shallow cabinet.
The heat maths
Every watt a server draws leaves as heat. The conversion is 3.412 BTU per hour per watt.
- A 600 W rack — server, switch, firewall — is 2 047 BTU/h.
- A 2 kW rack is 6 824 BTU/h, which is a 9 000 BTU/h split unit running flat out in a Johannesburg January.
The split unit has to run during load-shedding too, or the room cooks while the servers stay up. Add its draw — typically 0.8–1.2 kW for a 9 000 BTU/h unit — to the inverter and battery sizing in the load-shedding calculator. Keep the inlet air under 27 °C: the hardware tolerates more, but drive life and fan noise do not.
Airflow rules are cheap to follow: perforated doors front and back, blanking panels in the empty U so hot exhaust cannot recirculate to the front, and cables out of the exhaust path.
KVM switches
A KVM lets one keyboard, screen and mouse drive every server in the cabinet. An 8-port ATEN KVM runs from R 10 470 (median R 29 140 for LCD console drawers); a 16-port 19-inch LCD KVM is R 36 780 – R 53 650. For one or two servers, the out-of-band management port (iDRAC, iLO) does the same job for nothing. See KVM switches.
What this means for your budget
A 42U cabinet at R 10 620 is not the decision. The split unit (R 8 000 – R 15 000 installed), the extra 0.5 kVA of inverter and 1–2 kWh of battery to run it through load-shedding, and the electrician for a dedicated circuit are — and they are the items quoted last and cut first. Quote them with the cabinet.
