The range runs from 4U–9U wall boxes for a comms cupboard up to 42U floor-standing cabinets for a data centre, in standard and 1000mm depths.
Sizing by U, from smallest to largest: a 4U wall box takes a switch and a patch panel; a 6U suits a small office of a switch, router and NVR; a 9U wall box adds room for a short-depth server; a 12U open frame or wall cabinet holds a couple of servers and a UPS; 18U–27U floor cabinets suit a growing server room; and a 42U floor-standing cabinet is the full-height data-centre rack. Wall boxes mount at head height to save floor space; floor cabinets roll in on castors and lock front and back.
Getting the size right matters: too small and you cannot add hardware or route airflow; too deep or shallow and modern servers will not seat. Count your equipment's U-height, add 20–30% headroom, and check cabinet depth against your longest server — most rack servers need a 1000mm-deep cabinet.

What is the difference between an open rack and a cabinet?
- An open frame (2- or 4-post) is cheaper and cools well but offers no security or dust protection — good for a locked server room. An enclosed cabinet has lockable doors and side panels, better for shared or dusty spaces. Server Hub stocks both.
