Which network switch is best for a small business? The one that answers four questions correctly: how many ports you need in three years, whether anything needs power over the cable, whether anything shares the switch that should not see anything else, and how far it is from the next switch. Managed vs unmanaged, in one paragraph each
Unmanaged switches have no configuration. Every port talks to every other port; plug in and go. They are cheap, silent and reliable, and they are the right answer for a single office or workshop where every device belongs to the same trusted network and nothing needs priority.
Managed switches let you divide the switch into virtual networks (VLANs), prioritise voice traffic (QoS), bundle links, and see what is happening on every port. They are required the moment the switch carries more than one kind of thing: desk phones and PCs, cameras and the office, staff and guest Wi-Fi. "Smart" or "lite-managed" switches sit between the two — VLANs and QoS through a web page, without the command line — and are the sweet spot for most small businesses.
The decision in four questions
- How many ports in three years? Count every device with a cable — PCs, printers, phones, access points, cameras, the server, the NAS, the UPS card — then add 30%. Sixteen devices today is a 24-port switch, not a 16.
- Does anything need power over the cable? Access points, IP phones and cameras do. If yes, you need PoE on at least those ports, and the PoE buying guide explains why the watts matter more than the ports.
- Does anything share the switch that should not see everything else? Phones, cameras, guests, a point-of-sale terminal: if yes, managed, for VLANs.
- How far is it from the next switch? Under 100 m of cable: copper is fine. Over 100 m, or in another building: fibre with SFP uplinks. Copper between buildings carries lightning; fibre does not.
What a small business actually buys
- One office, 5–15 seats, no phones on the network: a 16-port gigabit unmanaged switch around R 560, plus an 8-port PoE switch around R 1 575 if there are access points.
- One office, 15–40 seats, IP phones and a couple of access points: a 24-port managed PoE switch around R 5 235. One switch, VLANs for voice, PoE for everything that needs it.
- Cameras on site: their own 8- or 16-port PoE switch on a camera VLAN, sized by watts.
- Two buildings or a long warehouse: a switch at each end with fibre between them, and a small wall-mount cabinet (R 1 730 – R 2 680) at the far end.
Two things to buy with the switch
A UPS. A switch that goes down takes the phones and the Wi-Fi with it. A 650 VA line-interactive unit at R 720 keeps a switch and a router up through a short outage; the load-shedding calculator sizes anything longer.
Surge protection. On the Highveld a strike on the mains or on an outdoor cable ends up in the switch. A surge-protected power strip is the cheapest insurance in the cabinet; fibre between buildings is the second cheapest.

A 24-port managed PoE switch at R 5 235 median plus two Wi-Fi access points at R 1 995 median covers most offices to 40 seats. Spend on the uplink and surge protection before the next tier of switch; a 48-port PoE unit at R 8 375 is only the answer when 40 devices are actually cabled.
