NAS vs server for a small business in South Africa: which one, and what it costs

NAS or server for a small business? A NAS is a storage appliance: drives, a light processor, a web console, and the file, backup and camera services most small businesses actually need. A server is a general-purpose machine: it runs your applications, your database and your virtual machines, and it can also serve files. They overlap in the middle and they are priced very differently. Here are the live rand bands for both in South Africa on 10 September 2026, and the decision.

What a NAS is for

A NAS (network-attached storage) is a small appliance with two to twelve drive bays, a low-power processor and an operating system built around sharing files and running backups. It runs on 40–120 W, sits on a shelf, and is administered from a web page. It excels at:

  • Shared files for an office, with user permissions and versioning.
  • Backup target for PCs, laptops and the server, with snapshots that survive ransomware.
  • Camera storage — most NAS makers ship surveillance software licensed per camera.
  • Sync and remote access for a distributed team, without the public cloud bill.

It is not a hypervisor host. Some units run a container or a small VM; none of them replaces a server for a database or an application with real users.

What a server is for

A server runs the business's software: the accounting system, the line-of-business application, the database, the domain, three or more virtual machines. It has ECC memory, redundant power supplies, hot-swap drives, remote management and — in a certified-refurbished 14G machine — a 12-month warranty at a fraction of the new price. It can serve files, but a NAS does that job with less power and less administration.

The decision in three questions

  1. Is the workload storage-led — files, backups, cameras? Yes → a NAS, sized by bays for 36 months of growth. A 4-bay unit at R 15 700 median holds 20–40 TB usable in RAID.
  2. Does it run applications, a database, or three or more VMs? Yes → a server. Certified refurbished around R 44 240 median; new when a support contract or PCIe 5 demands it.
  3. Both? Then both — and this is the common answer. The server does the work; the NAS is its backup target and the office file share. Together they cost less than a second server and they fail independently, which is the point.

The rule that applies to both

RAID is not a backup. It survives a drive; it does not survive a deletion, a ransomware run, a lightning strike or a fire. The standard is 3-2-1: three copies, on two kinds of media, one off-site — and a restore you have actually timed. A NAS with snapshots as the server's backup target, plus an off-site copy, is the simplest 3-2-1 a small business can run.

For write-heavy roles — a database, camera archives — ask for the drive's endurance rating (DWPD) on the datasheet. Consumer SSDs at R 860 and enterprise SATA SSDs at R 44 850 are both in the band above for a reason.

What this means for your budget

Put the money in drives and a tested backup before you put it in a bigger head unit. A 4-bay NAS at R 15 700 full of the right drives outlasts a 12-bay chassis full of the wrong ones. For most 10–50-seat businesses the shopping list is one certified-refurbished rack server (R 44 240 median) plus one 4-bay NAS (R 15 700 median) — not two servers.
