How much does a server cost in South Africa? In September 2026 a working, warranted rack server for a 10–80-seat business costs R 44 240 at the median — certified refurbished, with a 12-month warranty, ready in days. The entry point in that class is R 17 910; a fully loaded four-socket machine runs to R 395 020. New-build servers start around R 29 110 and are quoted to order, with a median of R 232 540.

Those are not estimates. They are the live, published, VAT-inclusive prices in the Server Hub price index on 10 September 2026, across 503 certified-refurbished rack-server listings and 6 595 products in total. This article explains the bands, class by class, and what they mean for your budget.

How to read a price band

Every band below is three live rand prices on the pull date: the cheapest listing in the class, the median, and the most expensive. The median is the typical price. It is not an average, so one fully loaded machine cannot drag it upwards. All prices include VAT.

Bands are for budgeting. A quotation is different: a firm, dated rand price for a verified configuration, which holds for its validity period whatever the exchange rate does.

Rack servers: the workhorse band

The certified-refurbished rack band is where most South African businesses actually buy. It is dominated by 13G and 14G Dell PowerEdge and Gen9/Gen10 HPE ProLiant machines: the R640 (120 live listings, median R 47 500), the R740 (119 listings, median R 58 520), the R730 (65 listings, median R 35 680) and the DL360 (25 listings, median R 28 460). The refurbished servers range and the Dell PowerEdge hub list them by model.

Within a model, the spread is configuration: cores, RAM and storage. An R740 with 10 cores and 32 GB is R 23 960; the same chassis with 48 cores, 1.5 TB of RAM and 46 TB of SSD is R 395 020. Both are "an R740". Read the configuration, not the model number.

New rack and tower servers

New servers are built to order, so the band is thin and wide: R 29 110 at the entry to R 852 320 for a fully configured current-generation machine. A new tower server — the choice when there is no cabinet and one to three workloads — runs from R 35 100 with a median of R 66 565. New carries the manufacturer's warranty, which we mirror locally.

GPU and AI compute

GPU compute starts at R 106 840 for a desktop-class AI machine and runs past R 995 000 for a workstation-grade build with a professional GPU. The median is R 227 220. Rack-mounted multi-GPU servers are quoted to order.

NAS and mini PCs

If the workload is storage-led — files, backups, cameras — a 4-bay NAS at R 15 700 median does the job of a server for a fraction of the price, paired with the drives. A mini PC (median R 11 960) covers a single service at the edge: a branch, a till, a gateway, a lab. Neither replaces a server for three or more virtual machines.

The warranty is the same length either way. The difference is generation, lead time and price — and whether the RMA desk is in Johannesburg or another hemisphere. Every warranty is additional to your rights under the Consumer Protection Act.

What this means for your budget

Budget on the median for the class. Treat the low as a negotiating floor and the high as a fully configured ceiling. A 14G certified-refurbished rack server carries the same 12-month cover as new at about a fifth of the median price of a current-generation build — spend the difference on storage, backup power and a tested backup.
