Dell PowerEdge in South Africa: R7x0 vs T-series, generations and rand prices (2026)

The model number is the datasheet's table of contents. Learn to read it and half the buying decision is made.

Dell PowerEdge is the most-searched server family in South Africa and the backbone of the certified-refurbished market: on 10 September 2026 the Server Hub price index carried 120 live R640 listings, 119 R740s, 65 R730s and 50 R430s, all with a 12-month warranty claimed in Johannesburg. This guide decodes the model number, walks the generation ladder from 12G to 16G, and gives the live rand bands by model so you can budget before you ask for a quotation.

How to read a PowerEdge model number

Take R740xd:

  • R — rack-mount. T is a tower, XR is a ruggedised edge unit, C is a cloud/multi-node chassis.
  • 7 — the class. 6 is a 1U two-socket machine (dense, for compute); 7 is a 2U two-socket machine (room for drives and cards); 9 is four-socket (large databases); 4 and 5 are the value-tier one- and two-socket lines.
  • 4 — the generation: 2 = 12G, 3 = 13G, 4 = 14G, 5 = 15G, 6 = 16G.
  • xd — extra drive bays. xs is the value configuration of a generation; xa carries accelerators.

So an R640 is a dense 1U 14G machine, an R730xd is a 13G 2U with a full drive cage, and a T550 is a 15G tower.

The generation ladder in 2026

16GR760, R660, R760xs, T5602023DDR5, PCIe 5New, quoted to order

12G still works, and it is the wrong buy: DDR3 memory is scarce and slow, the CPUs pre-date the mitigations modern hypervisors expect, and power draw per unit of work is roughly double a 14G machine. 13G is a sound budget choice where the workload is storage-heavy and CPU-light — a backup target, a file server, a lab. 14G brought NVMe, a modern iDRAC and Scalable Xeons; it runs current Windows Server, Proxmox and VMware releases without argument and is where most 10–80-seat businesses should land. 15G adds PCIe 4 and Ice Lake; refurbished supply is thinner and it is sourced to order. 16G is the new build: DDR5, PCIe 5, the generation to buy when a support contract, an AI workload or a five-year horizon demands it.

Why the bands are so wide

An R740 at R 23 960 has 10 cores, 32 GB of RAM and 300 GB of storage. An R740xd at R 395 020 has 48 cores, 1.5 TB of RAM and 46 TB of enterprise SSD. Same chassis, same generation, same warranty — twenty times the price, because memory and enterprise flash cost more than the server around them. Budget by configuration: write down the cores, the RAM and the usable terabytes you need, then price that, not "an R740".

Rack (R) or tower (T)?

A tower PowerEdge — the T160, T360, T560 line — is the same platform in a floor-standing case with quieter fans and no rails. Choose it when there is no cabinet and there will not be one: a single server in an office corner. New towers run from R 35 100 (median R 66 565). Choose the rack version when there is a cabinet, a hosted rack, or more than one server coming — and remember the depth rule: a 2U rack server needs a 1 000 mm cabinet.

What this means for your budget

Budget a certified-refurbished 14G machine at the class median — R 47 500 for an R640, R 58 520 for an R740 — and spend the difference against new on storage, the UPS and a tested backup. Buy 13G only for storage-heavy, CPU-light roles. Buy 16G when a support contract, PCIe 5 or an AI workload demands it. Every machine carries the same 12-month cover claimed in Johannesburg, and every price above includes VAT.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Dell R740 cost in South Africa?
Certified refurbished, on 10 September 2026: from R 23 960, with a median of R 58 520 across 119 live listings, VAT-inclusive. The top of the band (R 395 020) is a fully loaded R740xd with 1.5 TB of RAM and 46 TB of SSD.
Is the Dell R730 still worth buying?
For storage-heavy, CPU-light roles — a backup target, a file server, a test environment — yes: from R 21 130 with a 12-month warranty. For a production hypervisor host, step up to 14G.
What is the difference between R640 and R740?
Both are 14G two-socket machines. The R640 is 1U — dense, up to 10 small-form-factor drives, for compute. The R740 is 2U — up to 16 drives (24 on the xd), more PCIe slots, room for GPUs and better airflow, for storage and mixed workloads.
Are new PowerEdge servers available in South Africa?
Yes. 16G (R760, R660, R760xs, T560) is built to order and quoted as a firm, VAT-inclusive rand price with the manufacturer's warranty mirrored locally; lead times run in weeks rather than days.
