What does U mean in a server rack?

Equipment manufacturers design their hardware to fit these specific increments. An enclosed cabinet features lockable doors and solid or perforated side panels. In most South African office environments or factory floors, an enclosed cabinet is essential. It protects expensive hardware from environmental dust, accidental damage, and unauthorised physical access.
Enclosed cabinets also help manage airflow efficiently. Perforated front and rear doors allow cool air to be drawn through the front of the servers and exhausted out the back, preventing thermal throttling during intense workloads in warm server rooms.
What size server cabinet do I need?
To determine what size server cabinet you need, tally up the total U-height of your current hardware. Add the heights of your servers, switches, routers, and the heavy UPS units required for load-shedding. This gives you your absolute minimum baseline.
Always buy slightly larger than your current requirements dictate. The initial cost difference between an 18U and a 22U cabinet is minimal compared to the massive expense and downtime of replacing a completely full rack when your business inevitably expands.
Freight and delivery are also important factors to consider. A fully assembled 42U cabinet is bulky and requires specialised transport, whereas flat-pack options are easier to ship across South Africa but require dedicated time and tools for assembly on site.
