About server processors at Server Hub

Server processors for upgrades and rebuilds: Intel Xeon — from the E5 v3 and v4 generation through Xeon Scalable — and AMD EPYC, as single parts and the matched pairs a two-socket server needs. Every processor in this range is certified-refurbished and tested before sale.

The socket decides everything. A Xeon Scalable processor will not fit an E5 motherboard, and an EPYC motherboard takes only EPYC; within a socket, the motherboard and BIOS set which generations are supported. Upgrading a two-socket server means a matched pair, and the heatsinks and power supplies must cover the new thermal design power.

Prices are in rand with VAT included, and each product page states its condition and warranty. Desktop processors sit in PC components; the servers to put them in are in refurbished servers; heatsinks and other spares are in server parts. Can I upgrade the processor in my server?

Usually, within the same platform. The new processor must fit the socket, belong to a generation the motherboard supports, and sit within the chassis power and cooling limits; a BIOS update may be needed first. In a two-socket server, fit a matched pair of the same model.

What do Xeon Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum mean?

They are the Intel Xeon Scalable tiers. Bronze and Silver are the entry and mainstream tiers; Gold adds more cores, higher clocks and multi-socket scaling; Platinum is the top tier for the largest systems. The digits after the tier name identify the generation and the exact part.

Are refurbished server processors reliable?

Processors have no moving parts and rarely wear out in normal use, which makes them one of the safer refurbished purchases. Certified-refurbished processors are tested before sale; handle them by the edges, check the socket pins and fit fresh thermal paste. Each product page states the condition and the warranty.
