Windows 11 Pro vs Home: which licence do you need?

4 min read

By Humphrey Theodore K. Ng’ambi

Windows 11 Pro includes essential business features missing from Windows 11 Home, specifically Active Directory domain joining, BitLocker device encryption, and advanced remote desktop capabilities. If you are buying a PC for a corporate network or handling sensitive client data, you need Pro. Home is strictly for personal use.

What is the difference between Windows 11 Pro and Home?

The core operating system is identical, but Pro unlocks management and security tools required by IT departments. Home editions lack the ability to connect to corporate networks via Active Directory, meaning administrators cannot centrally manage user accounts or enforce policies.

Security is the other major dividing line. As detailed in Microsoft's edition comparison, Pro includes BitLocker encryption and Windows Information Protection. These features prevent data leaks if a laptop is stolen out of a car or lost during a commute.

Finally, Pro supports more demanding hardware configurations. While Home caps out at a single CPU and 128GB of RAM, Pro handles dual processors and up to 2TB of memory. This matters for high-end workstations running local databases or complex rendering.

Do I need Windows 11 Pro for a business?

Yes, any business with a managed IT environment requires Windows 11 Pro. Without this edition, your staff cannot log into the company domain, access shared network drives securely, or receive automated software updates pushed by your internal IT team.

Even small South African businesses without a dedicated local server benefit from Pro. The included BitLocker encryption is a non-negotiable requirement for compliance with the POPI Act when storing sensitive customer data on portable devices that are vulnerable to theft.

If you run a micro-business from a single laptop and only use cloud applications, Home might suffice initially. However, as soon as you hire staff or need to secure local data, the lack of management tools becomes a severe liability.

Can Windows 11 Home join a domain or use BitLocker?

No, Windows 11 Home cannot join an Active Directory domain or Azure Active Directory. This is a hard limitation built into the operating system. You must have a Pro licence to connect a machine to a corporate network infrastructure.

Similarly, Windows 11 Home does not include BitLocker drive encryption. While Home does offer basic device encryption on supported hardware, it lacks the full-drive protection and management controls that BitLocker provides to secure sensitive business data against unauthorised access.

If you buy a consumer laptop with Home pre-installed for a new employee, your IT provider will reject it. They cannot deploy their standard security stack or manage the device remotely until the operating system is upgraded to Pro.

How much does a Windows 11 Pro licence cost and can I upgrade?

You can upgrade from Home to Pro at any time without reinstalling the operating system. You simply purchase a Pro upgrade licence, enter the new product key in your activation settings, and the system unlocks the advanced features immediately.

When buying new hardware, purchasing a machine with Windows 11 Pro pre-installed is always more cost-effective than buying a Home machine and upgrading it later. These OEM licences are tied to the motherboard and cannot be transferred between computers.

If you are building a custom workstation or need a transferable retail licence, you will buy a standalone copy. Always ensure your hardware meets the strict Windows 11 requirements, particularly the need for a compatible TPM 2.0 security chip.
