For a midrange buyer consolidating virtualisation, databases and file services onto one array, three names come up most often: Dell PowerStore, HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000 and Dell Unity XT. All three are unified (block and file), all three are dual-redundant, and all three will run the same core workloads. Where they differ is architecture, how they scale, and where each sits in its vendor's roadmap — and those differences should drive the decision.

The three at a glance

  • Dell PowerStore is Dell's current unified platform: an end-to-end all-NVMe appliance that scales up and out.
  • HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000 is HPE's current unified platform: a disaggregated, scale-out all-NVMe design managed as a cloud service.
  • Dell Unity XT is Dell's prior-generation unified midrange array — a proven, cost-effective dual-controller design on SAS media that PowerStore is built to succeed.

Architecture and scaling

PowerStore appliances each have two active/active nodes and an all-NVMe back end with NVMe-over-fabric front-end connectivity. A single appliance scales up with expansion shelves, and up to four appliances cluster together to scale out — so you can start with one 2U node and grow capacity and performance in the same system, past 23 PBe per cluster.

Alletra Storage MP B10000 takes disaggregation further. Its 2U/24-NVMe enclosure holds two nodes, and a system runs two to four controller nodes, growing over a switched fabric. Compute and storage scale independently — add controllers for performance or shelves for capacity — which suits unpredictable growth.

Unity XT is a classic dual-controller (two storage processors) design. It scales up by adding SAS drive shelves behind the two controllers, but it does not cluster into a scale-out system. That keeps it simple and affordable, at the cost of a hard ceiling per array.

Media and performance

The clearest technical gap is the flash architecture. PowerStore and Alletra MP are end-to-end NVMe; Unity XT is built on 12 Gb SAS media (all-flash or hybrid). For latency-sensitive databases and dense virtualisation, the NVMe designs have the architectural edge; for general-purpose consolidation where SAS all-flash is fast enough, Unity XT remains capable and typically more affordable — especially refurbished.

Management and ecosystem

PowerStore is managed by PowerStore Manager with Dell CloudIQ analytics, and integrates deeply with VMware (VAAI/VASA, vVols, native metro), containers (CSI), Ansible and Terraform. Alletra MP is consumed and managed through HPE GreenLake, with InfoSight's predictive analytics — a strong fit for organisations already standardising on GreenLake as an operating model. Unity XT uses Unisphere and CloudIQ, and remains a well-understood platform with a large installed base and plentiful skills.

Which one for a midrange buyer

  • Choose PowerStore for a greenfield unified platform where you want end-to-end NVMe, the option to scale out later, and (critically) a clean migration path off an existing Dell Unity, Unity XT, SC or VNX estate.
  • Choose Alletra Storage MP B10000 if you value disaggregated, independent scaling of compute and capacity, six-nines availability, and a GreenLake cloud-operating model — particularly in an HPE-standardised environment.
  • Choose Unity XT when the budget is the constraint and the workload is general-purpose: it is a proven unified array that consolidates SAN and NAS well, and it is compelling as certified-refurbished. Just weigh it against the fact that PowerStore is its successor, and plan the eventual migration.

A sound approach for a first serious array is to size the workload honestly (IOPS, latency target, usable capacity after a conservative reduction ratio), decide whether you truly need scale-out, and then let the vendor ecosystem you already run break the tie. Pricing turns on configuration, capacity and the exchange rate, and refurbished options can move you up a tier — check the current catalogue for live figures on any of the three.
