NAS decoded: Synology, QNAP and TrueNAS

A NAS (network-attached storage) is a file-first storage appliance: it serves shared folders to users and applications over the network using SMB and NFS, and almost all modern units add iSCSI block volumes too. Where an enterprise array is engineered around a redundant controller pair and a storage fabric, a NAS is typically a single appliance (or a clustered pair) that trades some of that resilience for lower cost, an app ecosystem and far simpler administration. For small and mid-sized South African organisations, a NAS is often the first shared storage they own; for larger ones it serves backup, file and media workloads alongside a SAN. This guide decodes the three platforms that dominate the conversation — Synology, QNAP and TrueNAS — plus Dell's Windows-based PowerVault NX.

Synology

Synology sells the most tightly integrated appliances, all running one operating system: DSM (DiskStation Manager), which uses the Btrfs file system on supported models for snapshots and self-healing. The hardware splits into clear families:

  • DS (DiskStation) — desktop units, from two bays up to around twelve, for home offices and small businesses.
  • RS (RackStation) — rackmount units from 1U to 4U for server rooms.
  • FS (FlashStation) — all-flash rackmount units for I/O-intensive work. The FS6400, for example, is a 2U 24-bay system with dual Intel Xeon Silver 4110 CPUs and 32 GB of ECC memory (expandable to 512 GB), scaling to 72 drives across two expansion units and delivering over 240,000 iSCSI 4K random-write IOPS — aimed at virtual machines, databases, OLTP and post-production.
  • HD (High Density) — very dense 4U units (such as the HD6500, up to 60 bays) for bulk capacity on a single node.

DSM serves both NAS (SMB, AFP, NFS, FTP, WebDAV, rsync) and SAN (iSCSI for VMware vSphere, Hyper-V, Citrix and OpenStack Cinder), and DSM Enterprise targets primary-storage management with high availability. Synology's draw is its software suite — Active Backup, Hyper Backup, Surveillance Station and Synology Drive — which many buyers value as much as the hardware.

QNAP

QNAP offers the widest hardware range and, unusually, a choice of operating system:

  • QTS — the mainstream Linux-based OS on most models, strong on multimedia and the broadest app catalogue.
  • QuTS hero — a Linux OS built on the 128-bit ZFS file system for data integrity, inline deduplication and near-unlimited snapshots; it ships on the TS-h models.
  • QES — a FreeBSD- and ZFS-based enterprise OS for dual-controller, higher-availability systems.

The naming follows form and role: TS (Turbo Station) is the core NAS range accepting both 2.5″ and 3.5″ drives, TVS sits higher, and ES is the enterprise ZFS line. Enterprise rackmount units run 1U to 4U with 4 to 30 bays — the TS-2483XU-RP, for instance, is a 4U 24-bay chassis on an Intel Xeon E-2136. QNAP leads on connectivity options (2.5/10/25 GbE, PCIe expansion and M.2 slots), which makes it flexible but places more of the configuration decision on the buyer.

TrueNAS

TrueNAS, from iXsystems, is software-defined storage built on OpenZFS — the file system prized for end-to-end checksums, copy-on-write snapshots, compression and self-healing. It comes in two editions on a shared ZFS foundation: TrueNAS SCALE, the Linux-based (Debian) flagship now branded the Community Edition, which adds containers, virtual machines and scale-out clustering; and the older TrueNAS CORE on FreeBSD, which continues under maintenance but no longer gains new features (iXsystems has focused development on SCALE since 2023). Both serve SMB, NFS, iSCSI and S3, and their ZFS pools are portable between them.

The software is free to download and run on your own hardware; iXsystems also sells supported appliances:

  • Mini — compact SOHO/SMB and edge units (the rackmount Mini R offers twelve bays and, when fully populated, more than 200 TB of capacity).
  • R-Series — highly customisable single-controller rackmount systems.
  • F-Series — 2U all-flash NVMe systems with high availability.
  • H-Series — 2U hybrid or all-flash HA systems tuned for power efficiency.
  • M-Series / V-Series — 4U high-availability systems (hybrid, or hybrid and all-flash) for maximum capacity and performance.

TrueNAS suits buyers who want ZFS data integrity, no per-feature licensing, and the freedom to run on commodity or refurbished server hardware — at the cost of doing more of the integration themselves (unless they buy an iX appliance).

Dell PowerVault NX

For Windows-centric environments, Dell PowerVault NX is a NAS appliance built on PowerEdge servers running Microsoft Windows Storage Server. The NX3240, for example, is a 2U dual-socket system with Intel Xeon Bronze processors and up to 64 GB of memory, serving file (SMB and NFS) and block (iSCSI), managed with the familiar Microsoft Server Manager and Dell iDRAC9, with built-in clustering and failover. Because it is Windows Server, it slots natively into Active Directory, NTFS/ReFS permissions and Windows backup tooling — the reason to choose it over a Linux/ZFS appliance is fit with an existing Microsoft estate rather than raw features.

How to choose

  • For a first NAS in a small business, Synology's integrated DSM software and support are the path of least resistance.
  • For maximum hardware flexibility or a specific port/expansion need, QNAP offers the widest range — pick QTS for simplicity or QuTS hero when you want ZFS integrity.
  • For ZFS on your own terms, no feature licensing, and refurbished server hardware, TrueNAS is the natural fit; buy an iXsystems appliance when you need vendor HA and support.
  • For a Windows/Active Directory shop, PowerVault NX gives native SMB file services without a new OS to learn.

And know when to step up: once you need guaranteed low latency for many hosts, controller-level redundancy with non-disruptive upgrades, or synchronous replication between sites, the right answer is a dual-controller enterprise array rather than a larger NAS.
