HPE ProLiant naming explained — DL vs ML vs MicroServer, and Gen9 to Gen11

HPE ProLiant names follow a logic every bit as tidy as Dell PowerEdge, once you know it. Two letters for the form factor, a number for the class, and a generation that decides the processor era — read those three and a DL380 Gen10 stops being interchangeable with a Gen11.

ProLiant is the server line HPE built its name on, and after three decades it is one of the most common machines in South African racks — new and, increasingly, professionally refurbished. The names look cryptic next to Dell's tidy three digits, but they carry the same information: what the machine is, where it lives, and which generation of silicon it runs.

The letters: DL, ML, MicroServer

  • DL — density line, rack. The workhorses. DL360 is 1U (dense compute), DL380 is 2U (compute, storage and GPU headroom). This is where most business demand sits.
  • ML — modular line, tower. Free-standing towers for an office or a small server room with no rack — ML110 (single-socket) and ML350 (two-socket, GPU-capable).
  • MicroServer. A palm-of-the-hand micro tower for the smallest site or a home lab.
  • BL — blades (in a c7000 chassis) and XL / Apollo — scale-out and HPC nodes — round out the range, but DL and ML are what most buyers meet.

The number: class and socket count

The model number tracks size and socket count, much like PowerEdge's first digit:

  • DL20 / DL160 / DL180 — entry rack.
  • DL360 (1U) / DL380 (2U) — mainstream two-socket. The core of the range.
  • DL560 (2U) / DL580 (4U) — four-socket scale-up, for the largest in-memory databases.
  • DL325 (1U) / DL385 (2U) — the AMD EPYC siblings of the DL360/DL380, for high core counts per rand.

The generations, and what they mean for value

Generation is the number that most changes what you get — and what you pay refurbished:

"Gen10 Plus" is a real, distinct generation — not a Gen10 variant — so a DL380 Gen10 and a DL380 Gen10 Plus are a full CPU era apart. As with PowerEdge, Gen10 is where most buyers get the most compute per rand today; step up to Gen11 for the latest CPUs, DDR5, or a support contract.

If you know one line, you can read the other. A DL360 (1U) lines up with a Dell R640/R650; a DL380 (2U) with an R740/R750; a DL580 (4U, 4-socket) with an R940. The generations track too: HPE Gen10 ≈ Dell 14G, Gen10 Plus ≈ 15G, Gen11 ≈ 16G. Neither brand is universally "better" — buy on generation, configuration and the support terms you need.

What is the difference between HPE ProLiant DL and ML?
DL is a density-optimised rack server (DL360 = 1U, DL380 = 2U) for a cabinet; ML is a tower for an office or small server room with no rack. Inside, a DL and its ML cousin often share a platform — the choice is where the machine lives.
What is the difference between DL380 Gen10 and Gen11?
They are two generations apart. Gen10 uses 1st/2nd-generation Xeon Scalable with DDR4 and is the refurbished value sweet spot; Gen11 uses 4th/5th-generation Xeon (or EPYC) with DDR5 and PCIe 5 and is the current new build. Gen11 is faster and newer; Gen10 is far better value refurbished.
Is "Gen10 Plus" the same as Gen10?
No. Gen10 Plus is a distinct generation between Gen10 and Gen11 — 3rd-generation Xeon Scalable (Ice Lake) with PCIe 4. A DL380 Gen10 and a DL380 Gen10 Plus are a full CPU era apart, so check which one a listing actually is.
