Dell PowerEdge naming explained — R vs T, the model number, and xd / xs / xa

A Dell PowerEdge name is a spec sheet in shorthand. Learn to read the letter, the three digits and the suffix and you can tell, at a glance, what a server is, which generation it belongs to, and whether it is the machine your workload actually needs.

Most buyers meet PowerEdge as a wall of near-identical codes — R640, R740, R750, R740xd — and pick on price or on whatever the last quote listed. That is how you end up with a 1U server when you needed drive bays, or a four-year-old generation when a newer one costs the same refurbished. The names are not random. Each part tells you something specific, and once you can read them the range organises itself.

The letter: rack or tower

The first letter is the form factor. R is a rack server — built to bolt into a 19-inch cabinet, measured in rack units (U). T is a tower — a free-standing chassis for an office or a small server room with no rack. A T-series tower and its R-series cousin often share the same platform inside; the choice is about where the machine lives, not what it can do. If you have a cabinet, buy R. If you have a corner and a plug, a T-series tower saves you the rack.

The three digits: class, generation, position

The three-digit number is not a sequence — it is coordinates.

  • First digit — class and socket count. Broadly: 3xx/4xx are entry and value two-socket machines; 5xx/6xx are mainstream two-socket; 7xx are performance two-socket with more expansion and GPU headroom; 8xx/9xx are four-socket scale-up servers for the largest in-memory databases.
  • Middle digit — generation. This is the one that matters most. A 4 means 14th generation (14G), 5 means 15G, 6 means 16G — and, going back, 3 is 13G and 2 is 12G. So an R740 and an R750 are the same class, one generation apart: the R740 is 14G (Xeon Scalable, DDR4), the R750 is 15G (Ice Lake, PCIe 4). That single digit is the difference between two CPU eras.
  • Last digit — position in the line, usually 0.

Put together: R740 reads as rack · performance two-socket · 14th generation. R650 reads as rack · mainstream two-socket · 15th generation.

The suffix: what the chassis is built for

A bare model is the general-purpose build. A suffix retargets it:

  • xd — extra drives. A storage-dense chassis: where an R740 takes up to 16 drives, an R740xd takes up to 24× 2.5-inch or 12× 3.5-inch. This is the backup target, the file server, the software-defined-storage node.
  • xs — value / scale. A cost-optimised build of the same generation, trimmed for scale-out deployments where you buy many identical nodes.
  • xa — accelerator. A chassis re-engineered for GPUs and double-width accelerators — the AI and visualisation build.

So an R750xd is a 15G storage server, an R760xa is a 16G GPU server, and an R750xs is the value build of the 15G line. Same generation, different mission.

The generations, and what they mean for value

Generation decides the processor and memory era — and, in the refurbished market Server Hub serves, it is the biggest single lever on price:

The practical reading: 14G is where most South African buyers get the most compute per rand today — NVMe-ready, happy on a current hypervisor, at a fraction of a 16G machine. Move up a generation only when you need the newer CPUs, DDR5, or a manufacturer support contract.

How to choose

Work the name backwards from the workload:

  1. Where does it live? Cabinet → R. Office corner → T.
  2. How many drives? A lot → an xd. A few → the bare model.
  3. GPUs? → an xa.
  4. How new does the silicon need to be? Current hypervisor and NVMe on a budget → 14G. Latest CPUs / DDR5 / a support contract → 16G.
  5. Sockets? Two is the mainstream (4xx–7xx). Only reach for a four-socket 8xx/9xx for a genuine scale-up, in-memory database.

Read the configuration, not just the model number — a well-specced R740 will out-serve a thinly-configured R750 for most roles, and cost less.
