If you have shortlisted a 2U PowerEdge, you have almost certainly seen all three — often at overlapping prices once refurbishment is in the mix. What actually changes between them
R740 → R750: PCIe 4 and Ice Lake. The jump from 14G to 15G brings 3rd-generation Xeon Scalable (Ice Lake), more memory channels, and — the headline — PCIe 4.0, which doubles per-lane bandwidth for NVMe drives and network cards. If your bottleneck is storage or network throughput, that matters. CPU-per-core gains are real but incremental.
R750 → R760: DDR5 and PCIe 5. 16G moves to 4th/5th-generation Xeon, DDR5 memory (higher bandwidth) and PCIe 5.0. This is the platform for the newest accelerators and the highest memory-bandwidth workloads. It is a new-build machine, quoted to order, with the manufacturer warranty mirrored locally.
What does not change: all three are 2U, two-socket, take the same broad drive counts (up to 24× 2.5-inch), and run the same hypervisors. A well-specced R740 will out-serve a thinly-configured R760 for ordinary virtualisation — so read the configuration, not just the model number.
