A standard office typically requires one access point for every 150 square metres. However, dense brick walls or concrete slabs common in South African buildings will severely reduce this range.

User density is equally critical. An auditorium or open-plan call centre might only measure 200 square metres but house a hundred employees with laptops and phones. In these high-density environments, you must install additional access points to share the bandwidth load, regardless of the physical footprint.

Managing your network: Hardware controllers versus cloud management

Historically, business access points required a separate physical controller installed in your server rack to manage roaming, security policies, and firmware updates. While physical controllers are still used in highly secure, air-gapped environments, most modern businesses have moved away from this on-premises hardware requirement.

Today, most enterprise access points are managed via a cloud-based dashboard or a software controller running on an existing local server. Cloud management allows your IT team to monitor network health, configure guest portals, and troubleshoot connectivity issues from anywhere in South Africa.

Keep in mind that cloud-managed access points often require an ongoing software subscription licence. When evaluating options, check whether the hardware will continue to broadcast Wi-Fi if the management licence expires, as vendor policies differ significantly on this crucial point.

Powering your access points via PoE during load-shedding

Business access points should always be PoE-powered. Power over Ethernet allows a single network cable to deliver both data and electricity to the access point. This eliminates the need to install expensive electrical sockets in your ceilings or high up on warehouse walls.

PoE is particularly advantageous in South Africa due to load-shedding. By powering your access points from a central PoE switch in your server room, you only need to connect that single switch to your UPS or inverter to keep your entire Wi-Fi network running.

Ensure your network switches provide the correct PoE standard. Modern Wi-Fi 6 access points draw more power than older models and typically require PoE+ (802.3at) to function at full capacity. Check your switch's total power budget before adding multiple high-performance access points.
