This Intel Xeon Platinum 8260 runs 24 cores at 2.40GHz (up to 3.90GHz on boost), with 35.75MB of cache in a 165W power envelope. Part of the 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors line, it uses Socket 3647 and addresses up to 1TB of memory at 2933MHz DDR4.
Per-core software licensing makes core count a cost decision as well as a performance one. As a Platinum-tier part it is aimed at large databases and dense virtualisation. In a two-socket server both processors must be the same model; check the server's supported processor list, BIOS level and heatsink rating for a 165W part before fitting. Adding a second processor also opens up the memory channels and PCIe lanes attached to that socket. Its S-spec, SRF9H, pins down the exact stepping. Fresh thermal paste should be applied whenever a processor is fitted or refitted.
