This Intel Xeon Gold 6242 runs 16 cores at 2.80GHz (up to 3.90GHz on boost), with 22MB of cache in a 150W power envelope. Part of the 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors line, it uses Socket 3647 and addresses up to 1TB of memory at 2933MHz DDR4.
Per-core software licensing makes core count a cost decision as well as a performance one. In most dual-socket servers the second processor also brings its own memory channels and expansion lanes into play. Its S-spec, SRF8Y, pins down the exact stepping. A Gold-tier chip suits mainstream virtualisation and database hosts.
