This Dell PowerVault ME4024 is a 2U storage array populated with twelve 1.2TB 10K SAS hard drives. Together they give 14.4TB raw in twelve bays of the 24-bay 2.5-inch chassis, so twelve remain open for expansion.
Behind the drives sit two SAS controllers with 8GB of cache each and dual 584W power supplies. Also included: a rack rail kit.
With dual SAS controllers, the PowerVault ME4024 presents shared block storage to several hosts; typical uses are a small virtualisation cluster or consolidated file and database storage. With twelve drives, RAID 6 keeps ten drives' worth of capacity and survives two simultaneous drive failures. Dual power supplies mean one can fail, or one feed can drop, without taking the machine down. A dual-controller layout is designed so the array stays reachable if one controller fails, provided the hosts are set up with multipath.
Against an all-flash ME4024 build, this configuration favours capacity over latency.
Sold as certified refurbished, the array passes inspection and a bench test, and has its storage wiped, in Johannesburg before release.
