Configured with 24 1.2TB 10K SAS hard drives, this Dell PowerVault MD1420 is a 2U storage array for direct-attached expansion storage. That comes to 28.8TB of raw capacity, filling every bay of the 24-bay 2.5-inch chassis.
Behind the drives sit two SAS enclosure management modules and dual 600W power supplies. You also get a rack rail kit.
The PowerVault MD1420 is a direct-attached expansion shelf: its two SAS enclosure management modules link to a SAS host bus adapter or external RAID controller in the server, adding a 24-bay 2.5-inch shelf of capacity without replacing the host. Usable space depends on the RAID level chosen for the 24 drives.
Against an all-flash MD1420 build, this configuration favours capacity over latency. Raw capacity is higher than in the smaller MD1420 builds.
