Dell PowerVault MD1400 2U Storage Array — 9× 4TB 7.2K SAS, 12-Bay LFF, Dual SAS EMMs

Nine 4TB 7.2K SAS hard drives populate this Dell PowerVault MD1400 2U storage array. That comes to 36TB of raw capacity, occupying nine bays of the 12-bay 3.5-inch chassis and leaving three free.

Behind the drives sit two SAS enclosure management modules (4-port 12Gbps SAS each) and dual 600W power supplies. Also included: a rack rail kit.

The PowerVault MD1400 is a direct-attached expansion shelf: its two SAS enclosure management modules link to a SAS host bus adapter or external RAID controller in the server, adding a 12-bay 3.5-inch shelf of capacity without replacing the host. Usable space depends on the RAID level chosen for the nine drives. With two enclosure management modules, the shelf can be cabled to two host ports for redundant paths. Capacity can grow later by filling the free bays, without a change of chassis. With a redundant pair of supplies, each can sit on its own power circuit.

Raw capacity is higher than in the smaller MD1400 builds.

Sold as certified refurbished, the array passes inspection and a bench test, and has its storage wiped, in Johannesburg before release.
