Configured as a tower server, this Dell PowerEdge T440 combines two Intel Xeon Gold 5120 processors (14 cores each, 2.20GHz base clock) with 64GB of DDR4. The drive complement is eight 4TB 7.2K SAS hard drives, 32TB before RAID, filling every bay of the 8-bay 3.5-inch chassis. The operating system gets its own home on a BOSS card carrying two 240GB M.2 SATA SSDs.
The build is rounded out by PERC H730P hardware RAID (2GB cache), dual-port 1GbE RJ45 networking (Broadcom 5720) and dual 750W power supplies. You also get an iDRAC9 Enterprise licence for out-of-band management.
With 32TB of raw capacity, it makes a natural backup repository, archive tier or departmental file server, and 28 cores and 64GB are ample for the storage services that run on it. RAID 6 across all eight drives would keep six drives' worth of space and tolerate two drive failures.
