Four Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 chips (2.70GHz, 28 cores each) and 512GB of DDR4 memory power this Dell PowerEdge R940 3U rack server. It carries eight 1.92TB SAS SSDs for 15.36TB of raw capacity with all bays of the 8-bay 2.5-inch chassis populated. Two 240GB M.2 SATA SSDs on a BOSS card handle the operating system, separate from the data drives.
A PERC H740P RAID controller with 8GB of cache, 2 × 10GbE SFP+ networking (Intel X520) and dual 2000W power supplies complete the specification. The configuration also lists iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management and rack rails.
All-flash drives keep storage latency low, so the 112 cores and 512GB can be put to work on transactional databases, analytics or a dense set of virtual machines. Set up as RAID 10, the eight drives keep half their raw space and stay mirrored.
