This Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server built around four Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 processors (28 cores each, 2.70GHz base clock) and 1TB of DDR4 RAM. Storage comes as eight 3.84TB SAS SSDs, 30.72TB raw with all bays of the 8-bay 2.5-inch chassis populated. A BOSS card with two 240GB M.2 SATA SSDs is fitted for the operating system, keeping the front bays for data.
Around that sit a PERC H740P RAID controller with 8GB of cache, 2 × 10GbE SFP+ networking (Intel X520) and dual 2000W power supplies. You also get iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management and rack rails.
Flash throughout means quick random reads and writes, which is what SQL servers, VDI hosts and busy application servers lean on. Set up as RAID 10, the eight drives keep half their raw space and stay mirrored.
Where hard-disk builds of the R940 favour capacity, this one favours responsiveness with flash storage. Memory is a step up from the lighter R940 configurations, giving more headroom for memory-bound work.
Sold as certified refurbished, the server passes inspection and a bench test, and has its storage wiped, in Johannesburg before release.
