Configured as a 3U rack server, this Dell PowerEdge R940 combines four Intel Xeon Platinum 8180 processors (28 cores each, 2.50GHz base clock) with 384GB of DDR4. The drive complement is eight 1.92TB SATA SSDs, 15.36TB before RAID, filling every bay of the 8-bay 2.5-inch chassis. A BOSS card with two 240GB M.2 SATA SSDs is fitted for the operating system, keeping the front bays for data.
The build is rounded out by PERC H740P hardware RAID (8GB cache), 2 × 10GbE SFP+ networking (Intel X520) and dual 2000W power supplies. Also included: an iDRAC9 Enterprise licence for out-of-band management and a rack rail kit.
112 cores and 384GB with all-flash storage make it a strong match for SQL databases, busy virtual machines and other latency-sensitive work. RAID 10 across the eight drives would keep four drives' worth of space while mirroring every write.
Compared with a hard-disk build of the same R940, this all-flash configuration trades raw capacity for much lower storage latency. That is half as much again as the memory of a lighter R940 build, which matters most for virtual machines and caching.
