This Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server built around four Intel Xeon Gold 6252 processors (24 cores each, 2.10GHz base clock) and 384GB of DDR4 memory. The drive complement is eight 1.2TB 10K SAS hard drives, 9.6TB before RAID with all bays of the 8-bay 2.5-inch chassis populated. The operating system gets its own home on a BOSS card carrying two 240GB M.2 SATA SSDs.
Around that sit a PERC H740P RAID controller with 8GB of cache, 2 × 10GbE SFP+ networking (Intel X520) and dual 2000W power supplies. You also get iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management and rack rails.
A host of this size can carry many modest virtual machines, or a few very large ones, on 96 cores and 384GB. With eight drives, RAID 6 keeps six drives' worth of capacity and survives two simultaneous drive failures.
Flash builds of the R940 respond faster; this one is the capacity choice. Memory here is half as much again as that of a lighter R940 configuration, leaving more headroom for memory-bound work.
Sold as certified refurbished, the server passes inspection and a bench test, and has its storage wiped, in Johannesburg before release.
