Configured as a 3U rack server, this Dell PowerEdge R940 combines four 20-core Intel Xeon Gold 6230 CPUs at 2.10GHz with 512GB of DDR4 RAM. Storage comes as eight 2.4TB 10K SAS hard drives, 19.2TB raw, filling every bay of the 8-bay 2.5-inch chassis. Two 240GB M.2 SATA SSDs on a BOSS card handle the operating system, separate from the data drives.
The build is rounded out by PERC H740P hardware RAID (8GB cache), 2 × 10GbE SFP+ networking (Intel X520) and dual 2000W power supplies. Also included: an iDRAC9 Enterprise licence for out-of-band management and a rack rail kit.
With 19.2TB of raw capacity, it makes a natural backup repository, archive tier or departmental file server, and 80 cores and 512GB are ample for the storage services that run on it. Planned as RAID 6, the eight drives leave six drives' worth of usable space with double parity.
Against an all-flash R940 build, this configuration favours capacity over latency. It carries more memory than the lighter R940 builds, which matters most for virtual machines and caching.
