Here the Dell PowerEdge R940 3U rack server comes with four Intel Xeon Gold 6230 chips (2.10GHz, 20 cores each) alongside 256GB of DDR4 memory. The drive complement is eight 1.2TB 10K SAS hard drives, 9.6TB before RAID, filling every bay of the 8-bay 2.5-inch chassis. A BOSS card with two 240GB M.2 SATA SSDs is fitted for the operating system, keeping the front bays for data.
Supporting hardware includes PERC H740P hardware RAID (8GB cache), 2 × 10GbE SFP+ networking (Intel X520) and dual 2000W power supplies. The configuration also lists an iDRAC9 Enterprise licence for out-of-band management and a rack rail kit.
Consolidation is the obvious role: 80 cores and 256GB suit bringing the work of several older hosts onto one. Planned as RAID 6, the eight drives leave six drives' worth of usable space with double parity.
