Four Intel Xeon E7-8890 v3 processors (18 cores each, 2.50GHz base clock) and 1TB of DDR4 memory power this Dell PowerEdge R930 4U rack server. Storage comes as eight 1.92TB SAS SSDs, 15.36TB raw, occupying eight bays of the 24-bay 2.5-inch chassis and leaving 16 free.
A PERC H730P RAID controller with 2GB of cache, 2 × 1GbE RJ45 + 2 × 10GbE SFP+ networking (Broadcom 57800S) and four 1100W power supplies complete the specification. You also get iDRAC8 Enterprise remote management and rack rails.
All-flash drives keep storage latency low, so the 72 cores and 1TB can be put to work on transactional databases, analytics or a dense set of virtual machines. Set up as RAID 10, the eight drives keep half their raw space and stay mirrored.
Memory here is twice that of a lighter R930 configuration, leaving more headroom for memory-bound work. It holds twice the raw capacity of a smaller R930 configuration.
Sold as certified refurbished, the server passes inspection and a bench test, and has its storage wiped, in Johannesburg before release.
