Configured as a 2U rack server, this Dell PowerEdge R840 combines four Intel Xeon Gold 6252 processors (24 cores each, 2.10GHz base clock) with 256GB of DDR4 memory. It carries eight 1.2TB 10K SAS hard drives for 9.6TB of raw capacity, filling every bay of the 8-bay 2.5-inch chassis.
The build is rounded out by PERC H740P hardware RAID (8GB cache), quad-port 10GbE RJ45 networking (Intel X550-T4) and dual 1600W power supplies. Also included: an iDRAC9 Enterprise licence for out-of-band management and a rack rail kit.
96 cores and 256GB give room to consolidate many virtual machines onto one host, or to run memory-hungry databases and in-memory caches. With eight drives, RAID 6 keeps six drives' worth of capacity and survives two simultaneous drive failures.
Against an all-flash R840 build, this configuration favours capacity over latency. That is twice the memory of a lighter R840 build, which matters most for virtual machines and caching.
