This Dell PowerEdge R840 is a 2U rack server built around four Intel Xeon Gold 6248 processors (20 cores each, 2.50GHz base clock) and 512GB of DDR4. It carries eight 3.84TB SAS SSDs for 30.72TB of raw capacity with all bays of the 8-bay 2.5-inch chassis populated.
Around that sit a PERC H740P RAID controller with 8GB of cache, quad-port 10GbE RJ45 networking (Intel X550-T4) and dual 1600W power supplies. Also included: iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management and rack rails.
Flash throughout means quick random reads and writes, which is what SQL servers, VDI hosts and busy application servers lean on. Set up as RAID 10, the eight drives keep half their raw space and stay mirrored. Two power supplies let the machine run from separate power feeds.
Where hard-disk builds of the R840 favour capacity, this one favours responsiveness with flash storage. Memory here is twice that of a lighter R840 configuration, leaving more headroom for memory-bound work.
