Configured as a 2U rack server, this Dell PowerEdge R750xs combines a pair of Intel Xeon Gold 5318N chips (2.10GHz, 24 cores each) with 128GB of DDR4. Storage comes as twelve 4TB 7.2K SAS hard drives, 48TB raw, filling every bay of the 12-bay 3.5-inch chassis. Two 240GB M.2 SATA SSDs on a BOSS card handle the operating system, separate from the data drives.
The build is rounded out by PERC H755 hardware RAID (8GB cache), dual-port 1GbE RJ45 networking (Broadcom 5720) and dual 800W power supplies. Also included: an iDRAC9 Enterprise licence for out-of-band management and a rack rail kit.
With 48TB of raw capacity, it makes a natural backup repository, archive tier or departmental file server, and 48 cores and 128GB are ample for the storage services that run on it. With twelve drives, RAID 6 keeps ten drives' worth of capacity and survives two simultaneous drive failures.
Against an all-flash R750xs build, this configuration favours capacity over latency. It carries more memory than the lighter R750xs builds, which matters most for virtual machines and caching.
Sold as certified refurbished, the server passes inspection and a bench test, and has its storage wiped, in Johannesburg before release.
