This Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Gold 5218 processors (16 cores each, 2.30GHz base clock) and 128GB of DDR4 RAM. Storage comes as eight 4TB 7.2K SAS hard drives, 32TB raw in eight bays of the 24-bay 3.5-inch chassis, so 16 remain open for expansion. A BOSS card with two 240GB M.2 SATA SSDs is fitted for the operating system, keeping the front bays for data.
Around that sit a PERC H730P RAID controller with 2GB of cache, dual-port 1GbE RJ45 networking (Broadcom 5720) and dual 1100W power supplies. The configuration also lists iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management and rack rails.
Think of it as a storage node first: 32TB raw suits a backup repository, a surveillance or media archive, or a departmental file store. RAID 6 across all eight drives would keep six drives' worth of space and tolerate two drive failures.
Memory is kept modest in this R740xd2 build, which suits compute and storage roles more than large virtual-machine estates. The Gold processors are a tier up from the entry R740xd2 builds.
It is supplied certified refurbished: inspected, bench-tested and data-wiped in Johannesburg before release.
