This Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 processors (28 cores each, 2.70GHz base clock) and 512GB of DDR4 RAM. It carries eight 3.84TB SAS SSDs for 30.72TB of raw capacity, occupying eight bays of the 16-bay 2.5-inch chassis and leaving eight free.
Around that sit a PERC H740P RAID controller with 8GB of cache, dual-port 10GbE RJ45 networking (Intel X550) and dual 1100W power supplies. Also included: iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management and rack rails.
Flash throughout means quick random reads and writes, which is what SQL servers, VDI hosts and busy application servers lean on. Set up as RAID 10, the eight drives keep half their raw space and stay mirrored.
