Configured as a 1U rack server, this Dell PowerEdge R650xs combines a pair of Intel Xeon Gold 5318Y chips (2.10GHz, 24 cores each) with 128GB of DDR4 memory. Storage comes as four 8TB 7.2K SATA hard drives, 32TB raw, filling every bay of the 4-bay 3.5-inch chassis. Two 240GB M.2 SATA SSDs on a BOSS card handle the operating system, separate from the data drives.
The build is rounded out by PERC H755 hardware RAID (8GB cache), dual-port 1GbE RJ45 networking (Broadcom 5720) and dual 800W power supplies. Also included: an iDRAC9 Enterprise licence for out-of-band management and a rack rail kit.
With 32TB of raw capacity, it makes a natural backup repository, archive tier or departmental file server, and 48 cores and 128GB are ample for the storage services that run on it. Planned as RAID 6, the four drives leave two drives' worth of usable space with double parity.
Against an all-flash R650xs build, this configuration favours capacity over latency. It carries more memory than the lighter R650xs builds, which matters most for virtual machines and caching.
