This Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built around two 22-core Intel Xeon Gold 6238 CPUs at 2.10GHz and 256GB of DDR4 memory. Storage comes as eight 1.2TB 10K SAS hard drives, 9.6TB raw with all bays of the 8-bay 2.5-inch chassis populated.
Around that sit a PERC H740P RAID controller with 8GB of cache, dual-port 10GbE RJ45 networking (Intel X550) and dual 750W power supplies. You also get iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management and rack rails.
A host of this size can carry many modest virtual machines, or a few very large ones, on 44 cores and 256GB. With eight drives, RAID 6 keeps six drives' worth of capacity and survives two simultaneous drive failures.
Flash builds of the R640 respond faster; this one is the capacity choice. Memory is a step up from the lighter R640 configurations, giving more headroom for memory-bound work.
