Configured as a 1U rack server, this Dell PowerEdge R440 combines two 10-core Intel Xeon Gold 5215 CPUs at 2.50GHz with 64GB of DDR4. The drive complement is four 8TB 7.2K SATA hard drives, 32TB before RAID, filling every bay of the 4-bay 3.5-inch chassis.
The build is rounded out by PERC H730P hardware RAID (2GB cache), dual-port 1GbE networking (Broadcom 5720) and dual 550W power supplies. You also get an iDRAC9 Enterprise licence for out-of-band management and a rack rail kit.
With 32TB of raw capacity, it makes a natural backup repository, archive tier or departmental file server, and 20 cores and 64GB are ample for the storage services that run on it. Planned as RAID 6, the four drives leave two drives' worth of usable space with double parity. Two power supplies let the machine run from separate power feeds.
Against an all-flash R440 build, this configuration favours capacity over latency. It is one of the lighter-memory R440 builds; a configuration with more memory is the step up for memory-bound workloads.
It is supplied certified refurbished: inspected, bench-tested and data-wiped in Johannesburg before release.
