Configured as a 1U rack server, this Dell PowerEdge R360 combines a single Intel Xeon E-2434 (4 cores at 3.40GHz) with 32GB of DDR5 RAM. The drive complement is four 4TB 7.2K SAS hard drives, 16TB before RAID, filling every bay of the 4-bay 3.5-inch chassis. A BOSS card with two 480GB M.2 NVMe SSDs is fitted for the operating system, keeping the front bays for data.
The build is rounded out by a PERC H355 RAID controller, dual-port 1GbE RJ45 networking (Broadcom 5720) and dual 700W power supplies. The configuration also lists an iDRAC9 Basic licence for out-of-band management and a rack rail kit.
With 16TB of raw capacity, it makes a natural backup repository, archive tier or departmental file server, and 4 cores and 32GB are ample for the storage services that run on it. RAID 10 across the four drives would keep two drives' worth of space while mirroring every write.
Against an all-flash R360 build, this configuration favours capacity over latency. That is twice the memory of a lighter R360 build, which matters most for virtual machines and caching.
