The PERC H740P is a low profile RAID controller with 8GB of non-volatile cache.
Disk and array health show up in the server’s hardware management logs. Controllers of the same family can usually take over an existing array from its drives, but check firmware levels before swapping one for another. Drives connect through the server’s backplane, so the controller has to suit the backplane it is cabled to. As a Dell PERC it is intended for PowerEdge servers; check your server’s supported controller list. It is the low-profile PCIe card form of the controller. Arrays are created and managed from the controller’s pre-boot utility or from management software in the operating system. A hardware RAID controller handles striping, mirroring and parity itself, so the operating system sees simple volumes. Because the cache is non-volatile, cached writes are designed to survive a power cut, so write-back mode can stay on.
