ThinkSystem V2 vs V3: what the DDR5 / PCIe 5 jump buys you
Two generations of the same rack workhorses
For the volume 2-socket line — SR630 and SR650 — V2 and V3 are the two you will actually be quoting in a mixed new-and-refurb market. The gap between them is a clean platform generation.

What it means for a buyer
- Bandwidth and lanes: V3 roughly doubles PCIe per-lane bandwidth (Gen 5) and steps memory from DDR4-3200 to DDR5-5600. That matters most for NVMe-dense storage, 100GbE+ networking and modern GPUs.
- Core density: up to 64 cores/socket on V3 vs 40 on V2 — fewer nodes for the same consolidation ratio.
- Value vs headroom: V2 (Ice Lake) is the current refurb sweet spot — modern OS/hypervisor support at volume pricing. V3 is the choice when the workload needs DDR5/PCIe 5 headroom or the deployment must stay current for years.
- Same shape, same rails: both come in the identical 1U (SR630) and 2U (SR650) chassis with comparable drive-bay maxima, so a V2→V3 refresh is largely drop-in from a rack and cabling standpoint.
