Supermicro decoded: how to read a SuperServer, A+ and SuperStorage part number

Dell gives you a PowerEdge R760. HPE gives you a ProLiant DL380 Gen11. Supermicro gives you a SYS-221H-TNR — and refuses to explain it on the box. That is because a Supermicro system number is not a model name; it is an assembly code that fuses the chassis and the motherboard into one SKU. Learn three prefixes and one numeric rule and almost any Supermicro server decodes on sight.

The three system prefixes

Two component prefixes also appear in listings and quotes: CSE- is a bare SuperChassis, and MBD- is a bare motherboard. A full system SKU (SYS-/AS-/SSG-) is a specific CSE- chassis married to a specific motherboard.

The numeric block — two schemes, one tell

Supermicro runs two numbering schemes for SuperServers, and which one a model uses tells you the chassis's storage bias before you read anything else.

Scheme A — 2.5"/NVMe-first chassis (the leading digit is the rack height):

SYS-6 2 1 C = dual-socket, 2U, X13, CloudDC.

The one-line rule: a part number starting 1 or 2 is a 2.5"/NVMe box; one starting 5 or 6 is a 3.5"-bay box (5 = single socket, 6 = dual). In both schemes the third numeric character is the generation (0/1/2 → X12/X13/X14), which is the single most useful digit for a refurb buyer.

The family letter (fourth position)

A+ (AMD) adds a socket letter after the family (S = SP5), e.g. …HS = Hyper on SP5, …CS = CloudDC on SP5.

The feature suffix

After the family letter, the suffix reads left-to-right as storage type → drive-bay count → power → networking:

The A+ (AMD) twist

AS-[U][series][P][EPYC-gen][family][socket]-[suffix]. The generation is an EPYC digit — 5 = EPYC 9004-series, 6 = EPYC 9005-series (both Socket SP5, board gen H13/H14); older 4 = EPYC 7002/7003 (SP3, H12). The trailing S is the socket (SP5). Everything after that is the same storage/power/networking suffix as SuperServer.

Legacy four-digit numbers (X10/X11 refurb)

Systems before ~2021 use a four-digit block: SYS-[U]0[gen][family], e.g. 2029U, 1029P, 6029U, 4029GP. First digit = rack U; the middle "29" = X11 (1st/2nd Gen Xeon Scalable, Skylake/Cascade Lake); "19" = X10 (Xeon E5 v3/v4). These are the cheapest Supermicro platforms on the second-hand market but ship without manufacturer warranty and top out at DDR4-2933 / PCIe 3.0.

Buyer takeaways

  1. Read the third digit first — it dates the machine (X12/X13/X14 → 0/1/2) and sets the whole DDR/PCIe envelope.
  2. 1/2 vs 5/6 tells you the drive story — NVMe-dense 2.5" (1/2) versus HDD-capacity 3.5" (5/6).
  3. The family letter is the buying decision — Hyper for headroom, CloudDC for value, Ultra for the X11/X12 refurb tier, GrandTwin/BigTwin for node density, GPU for accelerators, SuperStorage for capacity.
