Rack Units (U) and Sizing a Rack
A rack sounds like a solved problem until you try to fit real equipment into one: a server that is 40 mm too deep for the rails, a cabinet rated for less weight than the kit you have just bought, or a power strip that cannot tell you how close you are to tripping the breaker. This decoder covers the four measurements that actually decide whether an enclosure works — the rack unit, the three external dimensions, the two weight ratings, and the power distribution unit — so you can specify a rack once and have it fit the first time.
What a "U" actually means
Rack equipment is measured in rack units (written U or RU). One U is 1.75 in (44.45 mm) of vertical space on the mounting rails. A device described as "2U" occupies two of those slots (88.9 mm); a "1U" server is a single slot. The unit, the hole spacing and the rail width are all set by the EIA-310 standard, built around the 19-inch rack — the 19 inches refers to the overall width of the mounting flange, with the vertical rows of holes spaced 465.1 mm (18 5/16") apart horizontally (EIA-310 / 19-inch rack). That standard is why a server from one maker bolts into a cabinet from another.
A useful sanity check: multiply the U count by 44.45 mm to get the usable mounting height. A 42U cabinet gives about 1.87 m of rail; a 48U cabinet about 2.13 m. The external height is always taller than that because of the top, base and castors — an APC NetShelter SX 42U stands 1991 mm externally, and its 48U sibling 2258 mm.
How tall: 42U, 45U and 48U
Height is chosen from how much equipment you need to mount against how much room the space allows (doorways, false ceilings, floor tiles and lifts all constrain a full cabinet). 42U is the long-standing default; 45U and 48U squeeze more mounting height into roughly the same floor footprint.

Going taller than 42U buys mounting space, not floor space — worth it in a dense room, but check the doorway and ceiling first.
Width and depth
Most IT cabinets present a 19-inch mounting width regardless of the external width. The external width is either 600 mm (space-efficient) or ~750–800 mm (the extra 150–200 mm is dedicated vertical space for cable management and PDUs down the sides). Depth is the dimension that most often catches people out: a deep server has to fit between the front and rear rails, and that usable mounting depth is less than the external depth.

On the NetShelter SX the four mounting rails adjust in 6.4 mm (1/4") increments, with a maximum mounting depth of about 915 mm and a minimum of about 191 mm (7.5 in) — so before you buy, take the deepest server on your list, add clearance for cabling and PDUs at the rear, and confirm it lands inside that window (APC NetShelter SX AR3100 datasheet).
Weight: static vs dynamic load
Every enclosure carries two load ratings, and mixing them up is how a cabinet ends up overloaded:
- Static (stationary) load — the maximum weight the rack can hold while standing on its levelling feet or bolted to the floor.
- Dynamic (rolling) load — the maximum weight it can hold while being moved on its castors, fully loaded. It is always lower, because rolling a top-heavy loaded cabinet stresses the frame differently.
Budget conservatively: total the mass of every device (a loaded 2U server can be 20–30 kg; disk shelves and UPS battery trays are heavier still) and keep well under the static rating — and under the dynamic rating if you will ever wheel it loaded.

Ratings vary by exact model, castor module and configuration — always read the datasheet for the SKU you are buying, not the range headline. (The APC AR3100's 1363 kg / 1023 kg figures are from the APC datasheet; the Rittal VX IT 15,000 N static and up-to-10,000 N on-castor figures from Rittal VX IT.)
Open frame vs enclosed cabinet
An open-frame rack is just the skeleton: mounting posts on a base, no doors and no side panels. An enclosed cabinet adds a frame, lockable doors and removable side panels. The choice is about what you are mounting.

Within open frame, a 2-post rack supports light, shallow equipment (patch panels, switches) and takes little floor space; a 4-post rack adds rear rails to carry deep, heavy servers. For a server room, enclosed cabinets usually win on security and on directing airflow front-to-back; for a comms/patching closet, an open frame is cheaper and cools passively. Open-frame products are still offered in tall heights and dual 19"/23" mounting for telecoms and network use.
PDUs: basic, metered and switched
A power distribution unit (PDU) is the rack's power strip — but the intelligent versions do far more than split a feed. Choosing the right tier is a monitoring and remote-management decision as much as a power one.

Two practical reasons to move up from basic: a metered PDU tells you how close a circuit is to its limit before you plug in one device too many, and a switched PDU lets you power-cycle a locked-up server remotely — no site visit — which is worth a great deal when a power event has left kit in a bad state and the rack is across town.
A quick sizing checklist
- Height — total the U of every device, then add 20–30% of empty U for PDUs, cable managers and growth.
- Depth — take your deepest server, add rear clearance for cabling and PDUs, and confirm it fits the cabinet's mounting-depth window.
- Width — 600 mm if space is tight; 750–800 mm if you have dense cabling to route at the sides.
- Weight — sum the equipment mass and keep it under the static rating (and the dynamic rating if you will move it loaded).
- Power — pick the PDU tier for the monitoring you need, and size the protection separately (see the companion UPS decoder below).
- Enclosure type — cabinet for servers and security; open frame for networking and patching.
