Rack, tower, modular or edge: choosing a PowerEdge form factor
R vs T vs MX vs XR — pick the chassis first, then the model
Dell ships the same generation of silicon in four very different bodies. The right starting question is not "which CPU" but "where does this box live".
R — Rack (1U-4U)
The datacentre default. Choose by class digit: entry 1S (R240/R340), value 2S (R440/R540), performance 2S (R650/R660/R750/R760 core line), 4-socket scale-up (R840/R940 → R860/R960), plus purpose-built variants — xa for GPUs (R750xa/R760xa), xd2 for dense storage (R760xd2).
T — Tower (4U-5U)
For offices and branches with no rack and no server room: quieter acoustics, standard power, and (on most models) the option to rack later. Entry 1S (T140/T150/T160, T340/T350/T360) for a first server; dual-socket (T440/T640 → T550 → T560) when you need virtualisation headroom or GPUs at the deskside.
MX — Modular (MX7000)
For consolidating many nodes into one 7U enclosure with shared, composable networking and storage fabrics. The c sleds (MX750c, MX760c) have no PSUs or fans of their own — you buy the chassis once and scale by adding sleds. Best where density, cabling reduction and lifecycle-in-place matter.
XR — Edge / rugged
For sites that are not datacentres: cell towers, retail back-rooms, factory floors, vehicles. Short-depth chassis, wide operating temperature (-5 °C to 55 °C), MIL-STD-810H and NEBS-3. Pick by job: XR5610 (1U, telco vRAN), XR7620 (2U, edge-AI with GPUs), XR8000 (sled chassis for RAN scaling), XR4000 (shortest-depth Xeon D chassis for the tightest spaces).
Form factor decided, the three-digit model number and its suffix (see the naming decoder) tell you the generation, socket class and specialisation. Specs here are from Dell spec sheets and technical guides.
