14G vs 15G vs 16G — the generation jumps that matter
Three consecutive PowerEdge generations sit behind the R740 → R750 → R760 line (and their tower and 4-socket cousins). Here is what changes at each step, framed for a refurb-or-new decision rather than a spec dump.

What that means when you buy
- 14G is the value-for-money refurb tier: cheap, plentiful, and fully supported by current operating systems. The gotcha is PCIe 3.0 — it caps NVMe throughput and modern 200GbE-class NICs. Prefer 2nd-Gen (Cascade Lake) CPUs for better perf/watt.
- 15G is the crossover generation: PCIe 4.0 and 8-channel Ice Lake give a real bandwidth and lane jump over 14G, yet it still runs (cheaper) DDR4. This is often the smartest new-vs-refurb balance in 2026.
- 16G is the buy-new tier for GPU/AI and dense NVMe: DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 unlock the headroom, at the cost of pricier DDR5 and a higher entry price. Don't overbuy it for a plain file/print or virtualisation role a 15G box already covers.
