Using a mini PC as a home server or Proxmox box

For ambitious home labs running complex network simulations or enterprise software trials, look for a mini PC that supports 64GB of RAM. Maxing out the memory capacity extends the useful life of your server and prevents bottlenecks as your self-hosting needs grow over time.

It is always cheaper to buy a mini PC with sufficient RAM from the start than to replace smaller modules later. Check the maximum supported memory specifications carefully before purchasing, as some ultra-compact models feature soldered RAM that cannot be upgraded after the fact.

Choosing between a mini PC and a dedicated NAS

When comparing a mini PC vs NAS for a home lab, the better choice depends entirely on your primary goal. A Network Attached Storage (NAS) device is purpose-built for holding multiple high-capacity hard drives in a RAID array. It excels at bulk data storage and automated backups.

A mini PC, conversely, focuses on compute power. It will typically only hold one or two NVMe SSDs, severely limiting your total storage capacity. However, it offers vastly superior processing speed for running applications, databases, and media transcoding compared to the low-power chips found in consumer NAS units.

Many South African tech enthusiasts end up using both devices in tandem. They run Proxmox and their demanding applications on a fast mini PC, and mount their bulk storage over the local network from a dedicated NAS. This separates compute from storage, offering the best of both worlds.

If you are just starting out and have a limited budget, a mini PC with a large external USB hard drive is a highly capable compromise. It provides the processing power needed to learn Proxmox while still offering enough storage space for basic media libraries and backups.
