iDRAC vs iLO vs XClarity Controller, decoded
Every enterprise server carries a second, tiny computer soldered to the motherboard: the baseboard management controller (BMC). It runs on standby power whenever the server is plugged in, whether or not the main system is switched on, and it is how you power-cycle, re-image and diagnose a machine sitting in another building — or another city — with nobody in front of it. Dell calls its BMC the integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC), HPE calls it Integrated Lights-Out (iLO), and Lenovo calls it the XClarity Controller (XCC). The hardware does broadly the same job on all three. What differs — and what quietly decides how useful a second-hand server is to you — is the licence tier loaded onto it.
The three controllers, and which generation has which
On the used market the model tells you the controller, so this mapping is the first thing to check.

The features that actually cost money: remote KVM and virtual media
Every tier, free or paid, gives you the basics: hardware health and inventory, temperature and power sensors, event logs and alerting, and remote power on/off/reset. That is enough to see a server's health and reboot it.
The two features people actually pay for are:
- Remote KVM (virtual console). A graphical, keyboard-video-mouse session over the network — you see the boot screen, the firmware setup, the blue-screen or kernel panic, exactly as if you were standing at the crash cart. This is the difference between diagnosing a stuck server remotely and driving to the data centre.
- Virtual media (and virtual folders). Mounting an ISO or image from your own laptop to the remote server, so you can reinstall the operating system from anywhere without plugging in a USB stick on site.
Without the paid tier you can watch a server and power-cycle it, but you cannot take over its screen or re-image it remotely. For a machine you will manage from your desk in Johannesburg while it lives in a Cape Town or Solwezi rack, that gap is the whole point of buying a server with lights-out management in the first place.

The Dell split is the one that catches buyers out: the headline remote-management features — virtual console, virtual media, out-of-band performance monitoring and Boot Capture / Crash Screen Capture video — are all unlocked by iDRAC Enterprise, not the base tier (Dell iDRAC9 Crash Screen Capture, KB 000195058). iDRAC Datacenter sits above Enterprise and adds deeper telemetry streaming and finer-grained power, thermal and airflow control on top of everything in Enterprise — it does not gate the everyday remote-console features.
A few tier notes worth knowing:
- Dell. Rack and tower PowerEdge ship by default with iDRAC Express, which does not include Virtual Console or Virtual Media — you need iDRAC Enterprise for those (and for boot/crash video capture and out-of-band performance monitoring). iDRAC Datacenter is the top tier, for telemetry streaming and advanced power/thermal work.
- HPE. The model is simplest: iLO Standard (free) versus iLO Advanced (licensed), with Advanced adding the Integrated Remote Console (up to six simultaneous console users), virtual media and folders, console capture of boot and crash sequences, directory-services/Active Directory integration and richer power management (HPE iLO). From Gen11 (iLO 6) onward HPE also offers a mid-tier iLO Essentials between Standard and Advanced.
- Lenovo. Gen-1 XCC splits three ways — Standard / Advanced / Enterprise — where Advanced adds the graphical remote console and remote OS deployment, and Enterprise adds virtual media, boot/crash-video capture, power capping and the level required to drive the server from Lenovo XClarity Administrator (Lenovo Press LP0880). From XCC2 (ThinkSystem V3) onward Lenovo simplified to two tiers, Standard and Platinum, with Platinum carrying the remote KVM, virtual media, crash-video capture and power-capping features (Lenovo Press LP1800).
Redfish: the common automation layer
All three controllers expose the industry-standard DMTF Redfish REST API, so you can script inventory, power and configuration across a mixed fleet from one toolset rather than three separate GUIs. HPE's iLO RESTful API is fully Redfish-conformant, and Lenovo exposes Redfish on both XCC tiers. Read-level Redfish is broadly available; automating the licensed actions (mounting media, driving the console) still depends on having the matching paid tier active.
Why this matters when you buy refurbished
A refurbished server can arrive with a perfectly good controller chip and no paid licence — or a licence that expired, or one that was tied to a different machine. Because remote KVM and virtual media are the features you will lean on daily, treat the licence as part of the specification, not an afterthought.
Before you buy, confirm:
- Which tier is actually installed (iDRAC Enterprise/Datacenter, iLO Advanced, or XCC Advanced/Enterprise/Platinum) — not just that the controller exists.
- That the licence is present on the unit and, on Dell, bound to that server's Service Tag (iDRAC perpetual licences are per-Service-Tag).
- That the dedicated management NIC is fitted and the controller firmware is a recent, supported version.
- If a machine ships with only the base tier, factor in a licence upgrade so you can do lights-out reinstalls — otherwise every OS rebuild becomes a site visit.
