Our AMD range is a processor catalogue rather than a general components aisle: Ryzen 9 for high-end desktops, and Threadripper PRO for the workstation builds where core count and memory bandwidth are the whole point.
Threadripper PRO is the part most South African buyers under-use and over-pay for elsewhere. Its advantage is not raw clock speed — it is lanes and channels. Eight memory channels and a very large number of PCIe lanes mean you can actually feed multiple GPUs, several NVMe drives and a fast network card at once, which is exactly what a rendering, simulation or AI workstation does and exactly where a consumer platform runs out of road. If your workload is single-threaded, none of that helps and a Ryzen 9 is the better buy for less money.
That is the honest split we apply when quoting. Rendering, compilation, simulation, video encoding and anything that scales across cores rewards Threadripper. CAD, most engineering applications and general office work do not, and we will say so rather than sell the larger part.
Everything is quoted in rand with VAT included. New processors carry a 12-month warranty mirrored locally — longer where AMD's own cover is longer — so a claim is handled here rather than couriered abroad.

AMD — frequently asked questions
Ryzen 9 or Threadripper PRO?
- Threadripper PRO earns its price when your work scales across many cores and needs bandwidth — rendering, simulation, compilation, multi-GPU machines. If your main applications are single-threaded, a Ryzen 9 is faster per core and considerably cheaper.
Why does Threadripper PRO cost so much more?
- You are buying platform, not just cores: eight memory channels and a very large number of PCIe lanes, which is what lets a workstation feed several GPUs, multiple NVMe drives and a fast NIC simultaneously. On a consumer platform those devices compete for lanes.
Do you sell the processor alone or a complete workstation?
- Both. For a build we would rather quote the whole machine — board, memory, cooling and power — because a Threadripper starved of memory channels or throttled by inadequate cooling is an expensive way to buy a slower computer.
What warranty applies to a new processor?
- Twelve months, mirroring the manufacturer locally, and longer where AMD’s own cover exceeds that. Handled here rather than couriered abroad, and in addition to your Consumer Protection Act rights.
Can you match a processor to an existing motherboard?
- Yes — send us the board model and current BIOS and we will confirm socket and chipset compatibility before you order rather than after.
Are these retail or tray processors?
- The product page states it per line, including whether a cooler is included. Tray parts are supplied without a cooler, which matters on high-core-count workstation chips where cooling is not optional.
